Clearing the site

  • The trial hole comes first and tells us what sits below. After that the site is cleared, set out off the drawings and excavated to the engineer's levels.

  • Anything worth keeping gets graded in. The rest is carted off as muckaway, with the waste transfer notes kept on file.

  • Machines matched to the access on offer, and hand digging used wherever plant would go through a root or a live drain.

  • Trenches battered back or shored according to depth, because no one should be working in a hole that might come in.

Footings and slab

  • Farnham's greensand digs easily but can run and carries springs, so the trial hole and trench support both earn their keep.

  • Strip or trench fill as specified, and the pour follows straight on so the trench is never left open overnight.

  • Building control sees the open trench before any concrete is poured.

  • Oversite poured onto blinded hardcore, with all the membrane laps taped.

Pipes and ducting

  • Separate runs for foul and for surface water, laid to the right falls with rodding access, and consent obtained ahead of connecting.

  • Digest 365 soakage testing sets the size, and it stays the required five metres clear of foundations.

  • Ducts for water, power, gas and data are laid while the ground is still open, as going back in later costs far more.

  • The run is tested, photographed, and only then covered over, which leaves a record behind.
