Building a Wall

Walls and coursing

  • A boundary wall can reach two metres under permitted development, but only one metre where it sits beside a road or footpath, which we check before quoting.

  • Piers, copings and a foundation worth the name, because a trench no deeper than a spade is the reason walls lean.

  • Cavity ties staggered, 900mm apart horizontally and 450mm vertically, closing to 300mm centres at every opening.

  • The coursing is worked out before a lintel, arch or soldier course is laid, so nothing has to be adjusted at the end.

Mortar and joints

  • Reading's Victorian terraces are solid lime-built walls, and lime is what they want back, since lime erodes in place of the brick.

  • Cement harder than the brick forces frost into the face rather than the joint, and that is why the faces blow.

  • Twice the joint width is the raking depth, hand-cut where a grinder would widen it.

  • Sand, colour and joint profile matched to the original, so new pointing does not stand out.

Repairs and stone

  • On a terrace the pointing has to match next door as well as your own, so samples go up on the wall before any mix is decided.

  • Blown bricks are cut out individually and replaced with a match, never rendered over to cover the problem.

  • Stone walling, cills, quoins and heads in natural or reconstituted stone, laid on the bed it was quarried on.

  • Cracks are stitched with helical bars across the joints, after the cause of the movement has been identified.
