Building a Wall

Walls and piers

  • Two metres is the permitted development ceiling for a boundary wall, dropping to one metre where it runs beside a road or its footpath, so your address gets checked.

  • Foundations, piers and copings done properly, since a wall set in a spade-deep trench leans within a few winters.

  • Wall ties at 900mm horizontally and 450mm vertically, staggered, and tightened to 300mm centres around every opening.

  • Nothing is laid until the arches, lintels and soldier courses are set out, so the coursing lands right at the end.

Lime pointing

  • A solid pre-1919 wall was built in lime and wants lime back, because lime is meant to be the part that erodes, not the brick.

  • Put hard cement on a soft brick and the frost goes into the face instead of the joint, which is what makes old walls spall.

  • Raked to twice the joint width, by hand where a grinder would open it up.

  • Colour, sand and joint profile matched to what is there, so the new work does not read as a patch.

Bargate and stone

  • Bargate stone, the honey-coloured sandstone quarried around Guildford, is repaired in reclaimed stone as the quarries are worked out.

  • Blown and spalled bricks are cut out one at a time and matched in, not rendered over to hide them.

  • Helical bars bedded across the joints stitch a crack, but only after we have established what moved and stopped it.

  • Stacks rebuilt, releaded and repointed, flaunching renewed and the pots left secure on top.
