Building a Wall

Walls and ties

  • Boundary walls run to two metres as permitted development, or one metre where they follow a road or its footpath, and we confirm which yours is before quoting.

  • A wall stands on its foundation, so piers, copings and a proper trench come first rather than a spade's depth and hope.

  • Ties set 900mm across and 450mm up in a staggered pattern, tightened to 300mm centres around openings.

  • Soldier courses, arches and lintels are set out before a brick is laid, so the coursing lands where it should.

Joints and mortar

  • Anything solid-walled from before 1919 was pointed in lime and needs lime again, lime being the part designed to wear.

  • Cement stronger than the brick sends the frost into the brick face, which is the usual reason an old wall is spalling.

  • Raked to twice the joint width, and by hand wherever a grinder would take the arris off.

  • Matched on colour, sand and profile, so the finished repair does not read as a patch on the elevation.

Cracks and stone

  • Esher's interwar and postwar cavity walls are the age where ties corrode, and rusting ties show as horizontal cracking on bed joints.

  • Individual spalled bricks are cut out and matched in rather than being covered with render.

  • Natural and reconstituted stone for walling, cills, quoins and heads, always laid on its own quarry bed.

  • A rebuilt stack gets fresh lead, new pointing and flaunching, with the pots refixed on top.
