Roof Shingles Closeup

Slate and tile

  • Reading's Victorian terraces were slated to last and plenty are now due, so we get up and look first before saying what yours actually needs.

  • Natural slate, fibre cement or tile, relaid over new battens and a breathable membrane rather than the old felt.

  • Ridge and hip fixed mechanically under BS 5534, as mortar bedding by itself fell short of the standard long ago.

  • Loft airflow protected as we work, so a tighter, warmer roof does not hand you condensation in return.

Roofing Torching Process

Flat roofs

  • GRP fibreglass, EPDM rubber or torch-on felt on Reading's back additions, chosen to suit the deck and the falls.

  • Decking exposed and checked before recovering, since a spongy board will print through whatever goes on top.

  • Proper falls to the outlet, with trims, upstands and drips formed to drop water away cleanly.

  • Flashing detailed around rooflights, hatches and pipes, the places flat roofs almost always fail.

Leaks and repairs

  • Slipped slates, storm damage and leaks traced to the actual source, which on a Reading terrace is often the valley or flashing not a slate.

  • Lead to the right code on flashings, soakers, valleys and chimneys, in place of mastic and wishful thinking.

  • Gutters, fascias, soffits and downpipes cleared or renewed, as damp inside a wall usually begins with an overflow.

  • Scaffold or tower to suit access, ground sheeted throughout, and the street swept before we finish up.
